Error message “The microphone does not appear to be connected” when using OS 10.2.

Problem:

Error message “The microphone does not appear to be connected” when using OS 10.2.

Solution:

In OS 10.2 it is important to check that the microphone is set up in both Speech Preferences and Sound Preferences. Please follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the USB microphone is properly connected to the back of the computer. Do not connect a USB microphone through the Keyboard or any type of USB Hub. To check that the microphone is connected properly and being recognized, open "Apple System Profiler" (HD:Applications:Utilities:Apple System Profiler - By default) and select the "Devices and Volumes" panel. Look under the USB section to see if the microphone is being recognized. The microphone must be recognized properly for ViaVoice to use it. Exit out of "Apple System Profiler".
    • Continue only if the microphone was recognized in step 1.
  2. Click “Apple Menu > System Preferences > Speech” and select the "Listening" panel. Make sure that the microphone being used is selected on the "Microphone" drop-down menu.
  3. Now select the "On/Off" panel on the "Speech" preferences dialog. Make sure that "Apple Speakable Items" is turned off and it is not set to start at log in.
  4. Click the "Show All" button to get back to "System Preferences" or close out of the window and click "Apple Menu > System Preferences".
  5. Open "Sound" preferences and select the "Input" panel. Select the mirophone being used from the list. Speak into the microphone and make sure that the "Input Level" is moving. Set the "Input Volume" so the "Input Level" meter is in the middle when speaking into the microphone. If the "Input Level" is not moving, make sure that the microphone is properly connected to the computer.
  6. If you would like to hear sound through the microphone headset, select the "Output" panel on the "Sound" preferences panel and select the microphone being used. Change the "Output Volume" to the desired level.
  7. Restart the computer.

If the microphone is still not being recognized properly by ViaVoice, please follow these additional steps:

  1. Close out of all running applications on the system.
  2. Open the Hard Drive and delete the following folders.
    • HD:Applications:ViaVoice
    • HD:Users:(log in name):ViaVoice
  3. Empty the "Trash".
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Reinstall ViaVoice normally. Exit out of the "ViaVoice SetupAssistant" when it starts.
  6. Reboot the computer.
  7. Download and install the "IBM ViaVoice for MAC OS X 10.2.2 - 10.2.6 update". This is available in the ScanSoft Knowledge Base.
  8. Reboot the computer.
  9. Start the "ViaVoice SetupAssistant" from the following location:
    • HD:Applications:ViaVoice:ViaVoice SetupAssistant"
  10. Follow the steps to create a new ViaVoice user. You should no longer receive an error stating that the microphone is not connected
